A police constable deputed as a bodyguard for the security of former NCP leader Baba Siddiqui was terminated from service on charges of dereliction of duty, officials said on Saturday. Siddique, 66, was shot dead by three men outside his son Zeeshan's office in the Bandra East area on the night of October 12, 2024. Police constable Shyam Sonawane, deputed at the Protection and Security branch of Mumbai Police was deployed as Siddique's bodyguard. An inquiry found that Sonawane showed negligence and irresponsible behaviour, due to which he was suspended from the service. He was then served a show cause notice about why he should not be terminated from the service. On May 2, the punishment of termination was accepted by the police constable, officials said.
