In Spain, a U.S.-German couple has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for confining their three children at home for over three years, driven by fears stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision followed their conviction for family abandonment, although they were acquitted of more severe charges related to unlawful detention.

Despite prosecutors' push for a 25-year sentence, the couple was granted a lighter punishment. The mother, also an American citizen, and the German father will pay 30,000 euros in compensation per child and lose custody for at least three years and four months. This case highlights the pandemic's lingering psychological impact on family dynamics.

Arrested in April 2025, the couple's children were found in poor living conditions in a northern Oviedo suburb. Defense lawyer Javier Muñoz argued that the children, home-schooled and well-nourished, had a stable family environment. Despite their satisfaction with the verdict, the couple considers an appeal.
