Football fans across New Zealand will witness a landmark moment in women’s sport this winter, with English giants Chelsea F.C. Women confirmed to play at Auckland’s Eden Park as part of the International Football Festival, supported by the Government’s $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston announced that the reigning Women’s Super League powerhouse will face an Auckland FC Women’s Invitational XI on Saturday, 8 August, in what will be the first-ever appearance by a Women’s Super League club on New Zealand soil.

The highly anticipated fixture adds further international prestige to the festival lineup, which already includes Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, positioning Auckland as a growing destination for elite global football events.

“This is a significant moment for football in New Zealand and a major win for fans, tourism, and the wider economy,” Louise Upston said.

“Chelsea F.C. Women are among the biggest clubs in world football, with a global fanbase, elite talent, and a record of success that has helped redefine women’s football internationally. Bringing a club of this calibre to New Zealand demonstrates the Government’s commitment to investing in world-class events that attract visitors, generate economic activity, and showcase New Zealand to international audiences.”

Chelsea Women have become one of the dominant forces in global football over the past decade, consistently competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and producing some of the sport’s biggest stars. Their arrival in New Zealand is expected to attract significant domestic and international attention, while inspiring the next generation of Kiwi footballers.

The announcement comes amid unprecedented growth in women’s football worldwide following the success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. FIFA reported that the tournament generated more than two billion global viewers and delivered record-breaking attendance figures, highlighting surging demand for elite women’s sport.

Officials say the Eden Park match will help build on that momentum, further strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting major international sporting events.

The International Football Festival is also expected to provide a substantial winter boost for Auckland’s hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors during a traditionally quieter economic period. Large-scale sporting events have increasingly become a key driver of visitor spending, hotel occupancy, and international exposure for New Zealand cities.

Industry analysts estimate that high-profile sporting events can inject millions of dollars into local economies through accommodation, transport, food services, entertainment, and visitor experiences. Global broadcast coverage of the festival is also expected to deliver valuable international visibility for New Zealand tourism.

“The festival will create energy and excitement across Auckland while supporting jobs and local businesses,” Louise Upston said.

“These events bring people into our cities, fill hotels and restaurants, and help stimulate economic growth during the winter season.”

The Government’s Major Events and Tourism Package has been designed to attract globally recognised events capable of increasing international visitor numbers and reinforcing New Zealand’s profile as a premium destination for sport, entertainment, and culture.

Recent events supported under the package include Linkin Park’s Auckland concert, the Ultra Music Festival in Wellington, Robbie Williams performances in Auckland and Christchurch, the FIFA World Series in Auckland, and the World Surf League Championship Tour event in Raglan.

Sports tourism continues to be one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, with international travellers increasingly seeking destination-based live experiences. New Zealand’s investment in attracting major sporting and entertainment events is seen as part of a broader strategy to accelerate tourism recovery and stimulate regional economies.

Football New Zealand and event organisers are expected to release further details regarding ticketing, fan experiences, and festival activities in the coming weeks.

With Chelsea F.C. Women set to step onto Eden Park for the first time, organisers believe the match will mark a defining moment for women’s football in New Zealand and reinforce the country’s growing influence on the global sporting stage.
