In a landmark move, Assam's cabinet has approved the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a key electoral promise. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the tribal population would be excluded, addressing the state's diverse cultural practices.
During a press conference, Sarma confirmed that the UCC Bill is set to be presented to the new legislative assembly on May 26. This decision mirrors implementations in Uttarakhand, Goa, and Gujarat but is tailored to Assam's specific requirements.
The UCC will regulate legal matters involving succession, marriage, and live-in relationships, along with the compulsory registration of marriage and divorce, while respecting the state's rich traditions and customs.
