A 55-year-old woman has been detained by authorities in a tragic case of dowry harassment, the local police in Shamli district confirmed on Thursday. The incident, which occurred on May 7, left her daughter-in-law with serious burn injuries and tragically claimed the lives of her two young granddaughters due to smoke inhalation.

The accused, Ishvari, was apprehended in Kairana town on Wednesday evening. Circle Officer Hemant Kumar revealed that her arrest followed a complaint filed by Anita's brother, Rahul. The complaint brought charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder, attempted murder, cruelty, and violations of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Anita, 30, is currently receiving treatment at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital for her injuries. The complaint underscored ongoing dowry demands and harassment leading up to the incident, which police say happened when only Ishvari was in the house. The investigation is still active, say the police.
