Prominent Buddhist Monk Remanded in Child Abuse Case

A renowned Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka has been remanded by a Colombo court on accusations of sexual abuse against a minor. The magistrate's court held 71-year-old Pallegama Hemarathana in custody, as the investigation into his alleged crimes unfolds.
Hemarathana, the chief priest of an esteemed temple, was ordered to remain in remand custody until May 22. He was transferred to the National Hospital from a private facility in Colombo at the time of his arrest.
The accusations against the monk pertain to an incident involving a 15-year-old girl at a temple complex in Anuradhapura. The arrest followed extensive probes by the National Child Protection Authority, which also resulted in the girl's mother's arrest for her involvement in the case.
