The United Nations war crimes court announced on Thursday the rejection of an early release request by Ratko Mladic, the 84-year-old Bosnian Serb general serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity.
Citing advanced, irreversible medical decline, Mladic sought release on humanitarian grounds, claiming deteriorating health. However, the court emphasized that the detention center ensures his maximum comfort, citing that no superior treatment exists outside the Netherlands.
Mladic, convicted for his role in the 1992-95 Bosnian war, continues to receive comprehensive medical care despite his cognitive impairments and multiple hospitalizations. His crimes include the genocide in Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo.
