Authorities in Assam's Cachar district apprehended two individuals accused of illegally gathering facial biometric data purportedly for an American multinational entity, local law enforcement revealed on Thursday.
The suspects, Mizoram residents, allegedly operated unauthorized biometric registration camps targeting young locals. They incentivized participation with minor financial payments, lacking any formal clearance or documentation, according to Rajat Pal, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime).
Social and legal repercussions loom as over 200 residents reportedly fell victim. A criminal case encompassing cheating and violations under the Information Technology Act has commenced at Silchar Sadar Police Station.
