Reshaping Parliamentary Pay: Inside the Reconstitution

The Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament was reconstituted on Friday, with appointments made by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan. This statutory body convenes annually to review and regulate MPs' compensation.

Composed of 15 members—10 from the Lok Sabha and 5 from the Rajya Sabha—this committee was established under the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954. It aims to ensure a balanced structure for MPs' pay, allowances, housing, medical care, and other facilities.

As per a recent Lok Sabha bulletin, 14 members have been nominated with one vacancy remaining. The committee operates under a chairperson elected by its members and holds the responsibility for maintaining equitable conditions for MPs throughout the year.
