Syria's Central Bank Undergoes Leadership Shake-Up
Syria has appointed Safwat Raslan as the new central bank governor, previously the head of the Syrian Development Fund. This change comes amidst the country's efforts to re-establish global banking ties post-civil war. Former governor Abdelkader Husriyeh was reassigned as ambassador to Canada.
Syria has made a significant leadership change at its central bank by appointing Safwat Raslan, the erstwhile head of the Syrian Development Fund, as the new governor. State media confirmed this on Friday after speculation by insiders in the banking sector.
The move comes as Syria aims to reintegrate into the global banking network following a prolonged period of isolation due to sanctions that stretched over the civil war years. Despite some sanctions being lifted, Syria's banks remain largely disconnected internationally, posing challenges to economic recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Abdelkader Husriyeh, who served as central bank governor since 2025, has been appointed as Syria's ambassador to Canada. Under his leadership, Syria made its first international bank transfer via the SWIFT system post-war, signaling a step towards global financial reintegration.
