Shakira Triumphs Over Tax Fraud Allegation in Spain
Spain's High Court has cleared Colombian pop star Shakira of tax fraud charges from 2011, overturning a €55 million fine. The ruling mandates the Treasury to reimburse her. The court found no evidence of her residing in Spain for over 183 days that year, as required by law.
In a significant legal victory, Shakira, the Colombian pop sensation known for hits like 'Hips Don't Lie', has been acquitted of tax fraud charges by Spain's High Court. The court's decision overturns a hefty 55 million euro fine imposed on her by the Spanish tax agency in 2021.
The appeal, lodged by Shakira, led the court to instruct the Treasury to reimburse her more than 60 million euros, including interest. The crux of the matter was the inability of authorities to prove that Shakira spent over 183 days in Spain during 2011, a requirement to establish tax residency under Spanish law.
The Spanish tax agency plans to appeal the decision with the Supreme Court. This legal battle highlights the pressure on taxpayers, as echoed in Shakira's statement, criticizing the system for assuming guilt and inflicting undue stress. Meanwhile, in a separate case, Shakira reached a deal avoiding trial for other tax-related charges.
