IAS Officer Saurabh Vijay Takes Charge as New CEO of UIDAI

Senior IAS officer Shri Saurabh Vijay officially assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Monday, bringing with him nearly three decades of administrative experience across key sectors in both the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of India.

Shri Vijay belongs to the 1998 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and is from the Maharashtra cadre.

His appointment comes at a significant time for UIDAI as the organisation continues to expand and strengthen India’s Aadhaar ecosystem, digital identity infrastructure, and citizen service delivery platforms.

Experienced Administrator With Technical Background

Saurabh Vijay is a civil engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, one of India’s premier engineering institutions.

Over the course of his administrative career, he has held several senior positions involving finance, planning, education, tourism, and development administration.

Before joining UIDAI, he served as Principal Secretary (Expenditure) in the Finance Department of the Government of Maharashtra, where he oversaw key expenditure and financial management functions for the state government.

Officials say his extensive experience in governance, planning, and public administration is expected to strengthen UIDAI’s operational and strategic initiatives.

Held Several Senior Roles in Maharashtra Government

During his tenure in the Maharashtra cadre, Shri Vijay held multiple important leadership positions across various departments.

• Principal Secretary, Planning and Development Commissioner of Maharashtra

• Principal Secretary, Tourism

• Secretary, Medical Education

• Secretary, Higher and Technical Education

In these roles, he was involved in policy formulation, institutional reforms, financial planning, infrastructure development, and governance initiatives across multiple sectors.

His experience in planning and expenditure management is considered particularly relevant as UIDAI continues to expand digital infrastructure and Aadhaar-linked public service systems nationwide.

Significant Experience at National and International Levels

Apart from his work in Maharashtra, Shri Vijay has also served on central deputation in several key national and international assignments.

One of his notable roles was serving as Director at the President’s Secretariat in New Delhi, where he worked closely on administrative and institutional matters at the highest level of government.

He also represented India internationally as Advisor to the Executive Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka at the World Bank in Washington D.C.

In that role, he was involved in discussions relating to development policy, international cooperation, financial systems, and regional economic issues.

Officials say this international exposure is expected to contribute to UIDAI’s engagement with global best practices in digital governance and identity systems.
