The Indian Navy’s Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar has concluded a successful three-day port call in Colombo, Sri Lanka, reinforcing the strong maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka while advancing India’s regional maritime vision of MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

The ship departed Colombo on 18 May 2026 after a series of diplomatic, operational, professional, and cultural engagements aimed at enhancing cooperation and interoperability between the two neighbouring navies.

The visit highlighted the growing strategic importance of India-Sri Lanka maritime cooperation in ensuring security, stability, and safe sea lanes in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

High-Level Naval Engagements Held in Colombo

During the port call, the Commanding Officer of IOS Sagar met senior leadership of the Sri Lanka Navy for discussions focused on:

  • Maritime cooperation

  • Regional security

  • Operational coordination

  • Safe and secure sea lanes in the Indian Ocean

  • Kandy

Passage Exercise Conducted With Sri Lanka Navy

Following its departure from Colombo, IOS Sagar participated in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Sri Lanka Navy Ship SLNS Nandimithra.

The PASSEX included:

  • Coordinated tactical manoeuvres

  • Communication drills

  • Seamanship exercises

  • Operational coordination procedures

The exercise was aimed at enhancing:

  • Interoperability between the two navies
