A criminal complaint has been filed before a Delhi court against Independent Lok Sabha parliamentarian Pappu Yadav over his alleged remarks on women in politics.
The complaint was filed by a Delhi resident, Satish Kumar Aggarwal, who alleged that Yadav made ''offensive, derogatory and obscene'' remarks against women during a media interaction on April 21.
According to the complainant, Yadav allegedly made sexist remarks that insulted the dignity and modesty of women, which amounted to criminal defamation.
The plea stated that the remarks were made in the backdrop of discussions surrounding the Women's Reservation Bill and were widely circulated through television channels, digital platforms and social media.
''The said statement further implies that women's entry and advancement in political life is conditional upon sexual compromise, which constitutes a direct insult to the modesty and dignity of women and amounts to creating an environment of sexual harassment in public discourse,'' the complaint read.
The complainant submitted that he had earlier approached the Station Head Officer of Farsh Bazar police station in Shahdara on April 25 seeking registration of an FIR, but alleged that no effective action was taken.
It added that a grievance was also lodged through the CM Jan Sunwai Portal, following which Delhi Police reportedly forwarded the matter to the Superintendent of Police, Purnea, Bihar, citing jurisdictional issues.
The petition has sought action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 79, 356(2) and 356(3), dealing with insulting the modesty of a woman and defamation.
It has also urged the court to direct the police to conduct a ''fair, impartial and time-bound investigation'' or alternatively order an inquiry under Section 202 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
