The consultation focused on understanding operational challenges, improving ecosystem readiness and strengthening collaboration between the government and private sector to support the next phase of India’s electric transport revolution.
Government Prioritising Electric Heavy Mobility
Addressing the gathering, H. D. Kumaraswamy emphasized that electric buses and electric trucks are expected to become central pillars of India’s future transportation and logistics systems.
“India is witnessing a decisive shift towards clean and efficient transportation. E-Buses are the future of passenger mobility, and E-Trucks will define the next era of logistics and freight transport in our country,” the Minister said.
He highlighted that the transition to electric heavy mobility is not only important for environmental sustainability but also for long-term economic competitiveness and energy security.
Officials from the Ministry of Heavy Industries stated that the government is working to create a supportive ecosystem for large-scale deployment of electric commercial vehicles across urban, inter-city and freight transport networks.
Stakeholder Consultation Focuses on Practical Challenges
The consultation was designed to provide a direct platform for industry participants to share operational realities and practical concerns affecting the adoption of electric commercial vehicles.
Stakeholders discussed a wide range of issues, including:
-
Financing access
-
Charging infrastructure
-
Fleet deployment models
-
Operational viability
-
Battery management
-
Maintenance support
-
Long-term ecosystem development
-
Commercial sustainability
Participants also shared on-ground experiences and sector-specific challenges faced during electric fleet operations.
The discussions aimed to help policymakers develop more practical, industry-responsive and scalable solutions for accelerating electric mobility adoption.
Government Promotes Collaborative Policymaking
Kumaraswamy stressed the importance of close collaboration between government and industry stakeholders in shaping India’s clean transport future.
“This consultation was not merely a policy discussion. It was an important platform to hear directly from the operators and stakeholders who are driving transport services on the ground across India. Their feedback and experience are extremely valuable in shaping the future roadmap,” he stated.
The Minister emphasized that the government remains committed to ensuring that India’s transition to electric mobility is:
-
Practical
-
Inclusive
-
Economically sustainable
-
Industry-friendly
Officials believe industry consultations will play a critical role in improving implementation frameworks and boosting investor confidence in the sector.
Senior Ministry Officials Participate in Roadmap Discussions
Senior officials from the Ministry of Heavy Industries also participated in the consultation and shared insights regarding India’s future roadmap for electric heavy mobility.
Among those present were:
-
Heavy Industries Secretary Shri Kamran Rizvi
-
Additional Secretary Dr Hanif Qureshi
The officials discussed policy direction, infrastructure development and emerging opportunities within India’s growing electric commercial vehicle market.
Electric Mobility Linked to Prime Minister Modi’s Vision
The Union Minister stated that the push for electric buses and trucks aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision for sustainable development, innovation and modern infrastructure.
“Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India is moving towards a future that prioritizes sustainability, innovation, and efficient public infrastructure,” Kumaraswamy said.
He added that the shift toward electric mobility represents not only an environmental necessity but also an economic and strategic imperative for the country.
“The push for E-Buses and E-Trucks is not just an environmental necessity, but an economic and strategic imperative for New India,” he remarked.
Electric Buses Seen as Future Backbone of Public Transport
Officials highlighted that electric buses are expected to play a transformative role in India’s urban mobility systems.
Benefits of large-scale electric bus deployment include:
-
Reduced air pollution
-
Lower fuel dependency
-
Reduced operational costs
-
Quieter urban transport
-
Lower carbon emissions
-
Improved energy efficiency
Several Indian cities have already begun expanding electric bus fleets under various central and state government initiatives.
The Ministry believes electric buses will become increasingly important in supporting sustainable urbanization and public transport modernization.
Electric Trucks to Transform Logistics and Freight Sector
The discussions also focused heavily on electric trucks, which are increasingly viewed as critical for decarbonising India’s logistics and freight transportation sectors.
Industry experts highlighted the growing need for:
-
Dedicated charging infrastructure
-
Battery swapping solutions
-
Long-haul charging networks
-
Financial incentives
-
Fleet transition support
Electric trucks are expected to contribute significantly to reducing emissions from commercial transport, one of the largest contributors to fuel consumption and pollution.
Financing and Infrastructure Remain Key Challenges
Participants emphasized that while interest in electric mobility is growing rapidly, several challenges continue to slow adoption.
Key concerns raised during the consultation included:
-
High upfront vehicle costs
-
Limited financing access
-
Charging infrastructure gaps
-
Battery replacement costs
-
Operational uncertainty
-
Long-term maintenance support
Industry representatives called for stronger policy support, improved financing mechanisms and faster infrastructure development to accelerate commercial viability.
Ministry Seeks Robust Ecosystem for Large-Scale Deployment
The Ministry of Heavy Industries said the consultation forms part of broader efforts to build a robust and scalable ecosystem for electric mobility in India.
The government is increasingly focusing on:
-
Domestic manufacturing
-
Battery production
-
Supply chain localisation
-
Technology innovation
-
Public-private partnerships
-
Sustainable mobility solutions
Officials stated that industry participation will remain central to shaping the country’s electric transport future.
India’s Clean Mobility Transition Accelerating
