Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari today conducted a high-level review of National Highway projects covering 4,178 kilometres across Assam during a meeting held in New Delhi.

The review was undertaken following inputs and concerns highlighted through media and social media regarding the progress, quality and maintenance of highway infrastructure projects in the state.

The meeting was attended by:

  • Union Ministers of State Shri Ajay Tamta and Shri Harsh Malhotra

  • Officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH)

  • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)

  • National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL)

  • Project contractors and infrastructure stakeholders

Focus on Quality, Maintenance and Faster Execution

During the meeting, Shri Nitin Gadkari emphasized the urgent need to accelerate on-ground execution of highway projects while ensuring strict quality standards and long-term durability of road infrastructure.

The Minister directed officials to strengthen:

  • Quality monitoring mechanisms

  • Project supervision systems

  • Maintenance protocols

  • Construction standards

He stressed that highway infrastructure must not only be completed quickly but should also provide superior riding quality and long-lasting performance.

Officials discussed the status of ongoing highway projects, construction challenges and maintenance-related concerns affecting key corridors in Assam.

Government Prioritises Durable and Modern Highway Infrastructure

Shri Gadkari highlighted the importance of adopting modern construction technologies and engineering practices to improve the durability and resilience of road assets.

The Minister called for greater use of:

  • Advanced construction methods

  • Improved materials

  • Scientific maintenance systems

  • Modern monitoring technologies

Officials stated that the Ministry is increasingly focusing on building highways capable of withstanding challenging climatic conditions, particularly in the Northeast region.

Special Emphasis on Monsoon Preparedness

Given Assam’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall and flooding during the monsoon season, the Union Minister laid strong emphasis on comprehensive monsoon preparedness measures.

He directed officials to ensure:

  • Robust drainage systems

  • Effective slope protection measures

  • Landslide mitigation mechanisms

  • Rapid response systems

  • Emergency maintenance readiness

The Minister stressed that proactive planning is necessary to minimize disruptions to traffic movement and ensure commuter safety during adverse weather conditions.

Officials were instructed to identify vulnerable stretches and strengthen preventive measures before the peak monsoon period.

Northeast Infrastructure Development Remains Key Priority

The review reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening road connectivity and infrastructure development in the Northeast region.

Assam serves as a strategic gateway to the Northeast, and the improvement of highway infrastructure is considered critical for:

  • Regional connectivity

  • Economic development

  • Trade movement

  • Tourism growth

  • National security logistics

Officials noted that highway expansion and modernization projects in Assam are part of broader efforts to improve transportation infrastructure across the entire Northeastern region.

Media and Social Media Feedback Integrated into Governance

The review meeting also highlighted the government’s increasing use of public feedback and digital monitoring in infrastructure governance.

The Ministry reportedly initiated the review after concerns regarding project execution and road conditions surfaced through:

  • News reports

  • Public feedback

  • Social media platforms

Officials stated that integrating citizen feedback helps improve accountability and enables faster response to infrastructure-related concerns.

NHAI and NHIDCL to Strengthen Monitoring

Officials from NHAI and NHIDCL were instructed to intensify project monitoring and coordination with contractors to avoid delays and quality issues.

The agencies were also asked to:

  • Conduct regular field inspections

  • Improve coordination with state authorities

  • Ensure timely maintenance interventions

  • Enhance contractor accountability

Special attention is expected to be given to critical highway corridors and vulnerable stretches affected by heavy rainfall and difficult terrain conditions.

Focus on Commuter Safety and Reliable Connectivity

The Union Minister reiterated that ensuring safe and uninterrupted road connectivity remains a top priority, especially in strategically important and geographically challenging regions like Assam.

Officials stated that improved highway quality and better maintenance systems are expected to:

  • Reduce travel disruptions

  • Improve transportation efficiency

  • Enhance commuter safety

  • Support economic activity

  • Strengthen regional integration

Government Accelerating Infrastructure Push in Northeast

Over recent years, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has significantly expanded investments in road infrastructure across the Northeast.

Several major initiatives have focused on:

  • National highway expansion

  • Border connectivity

  • Bridge construction

  • Tunnel development

  • All-weather road networks

The latest review meeting signals continued government emphasis on ensuring that ongoing infrastructure projects are completed efficiently while maintaining high quality standards.

Long-Term Focus on Resilient Infrastructure

Experts note that climate-resilient infrastructure is becoming increasingly important in states like Assam, where heavy rainfall, floods and landslides frequently impact transportation networks.

The government’s focus on:

  • Drainage management

  • Slope stabilization

  • Rapid response systems

  • Durable construction technologies

is expected to improve the resilience and reliability of national highways in the region.

Officials indicated that the Ministry will continue closely monitoring project progress and maintenance standards to ensure timely completion and long-term infrastructure sustainability.
