A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife and dumping her body in a pond in 2019 after the couple remained childless, police said on Saturday.
According to the prosecution, Nepal Paswan, a resident of Sonadi village in Ghazipur district's Bhanwarkol police station area, had married his daughter Tetri to Dinanath Paswan, son of Ramjeet Paswan of Visheshwarpur village under Narhi police station limits in Ballia, in 2014.
The prosecution alleged that Dinanath used to harass his wife over dowry demands and also taunted her for not bearing a child. On the night of August 10, 2019, he allegedly killed Tetri and threw her body into the pond.
Based on a complaint lodged by her father, the police registered a case against Dinanath under sections of the IPC provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. After the investigation, police filed a charge sheet against the accused in court.
Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh said Additional District Judge Harish Kumar, after hearing arguments from both sides on Friday, sentenced Dinanath to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
