Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has voiced his surprise at the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Central Water Commission's decision to consider Karnataka's proposal for the Mekedatu project without consulting Tamil Nadu.
He has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reject the Detailed Project Report prepared by Karnataka, claiming it violates the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court judgment. The Chief Minister further suggested that PM Modi should advise Karnataka to halt any new projects without the consent of co-basin states.
Vijay highlighted that Karnataka's announcement regarding the 'Bhoomi Puja' for the Mekedatu reservoir has caused significant concern among Tamil Nadu farmers reliant on the Cauvery river for their livelihoods. He emphasized that a resolution to the Cauvery water dispute was achieved after three decades of legal battles, with a 2018 Supreme Court ruling currently being implemented.
