Chennai Contractor Faces Legal Action After Fatal Wall Collapse at Bengaluru Hospital

Nearly a month after the fatal incident, an FIR was registered against a Chennai-based contractor firm in connection with the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital wall collapse in Bengaluru that claimed seven lives, officials said on Tuesday.

The case was filed against ASR Traders at the Commercial Street police station on May 20 under charges of causing death by negligence, following a complaint by Chandru S D, Executive Engineer in the Health and Family Welfare Engineering Wing, officials said.

According to the complaint, a technical committee was constituted to investigate the incident.

The inquiry found that ASR Traders had been entrusted with demolition and debris removal work for the construction of a new building at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical College and Research Institute.

The committee reportedly found that the contractor failed to scientifically dispose of the demolition debris and left construction waste at the site, which is believed to have contributed to the incident.

Officials said the contractor firm had been awarded the demolition contract on July 1, 2017.

A notice was issued to the firm on May 14, 2026, seeking an explanation by May 18, but no response was received, police said.

Following directions from the Chief Secretary of the Karnataka government, authorities filed a complaint against the contractor, they added.

On April 29, following heavy rainfall in Bengaluru, a compound wall at Bowring Hospital suddenly collapsed, killing seven people, including a child, on the spot.
