Authorities have taken into custody a woman and her partner following allegations that they set her husband ablaze after a clandestine affair surfaced in the village of Rehra, Uttar Pradesh. The incident happened on May 21, leaving 28-year-old Lalji Gautam with severe burn injuries. He is receiving medical care in Basti, where his condition remains critical.

Investigations disclosed that Pooja Gautam, married to Lalji for eight years, was involved with Firoz, who had masqueraded as a family member for two years. On a fateful night, upon discovering the true nature of their connection, Pooja and Firoz allegedly tied Lalji to a cot, doused him with a flammable liquid, and ignited it.

The commotion alerted Lalji's relatives, who extinguished the flames but not before he sustained critical injuries. A formal complaint was lodged by Gautam's father, Ghammal Prasad, leading to charges against Pooja and Firoz. The couple was apprehended at a bus stop and remanded to judicial custody.
