Delhi High Court Denies Bail in Dowry Death Case

The Delhi High Court has declined to grant bail to a woman accused in the suicide case of her daughter-in-law, suspected to have been triggered by persistent dowry demands. The tragic incident occurred merely eight months post-wedding, underlining severe alleged mistreatment by her marital family.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma cited the loss of a young life in distressing conditions, accentuated by allegations of harassment that may have led the victim to see suicide as her only refuge. The court also expressed concern over the potential of the accused to influence key witnesses, which influenced the decision to deny bail.

A call recording retrieved shortly before the incident reportedly captures the deceased expressing distress over her husband's abusive behavior, including tearing her clothes and using threatening language. This evidence, combined with allegations of Rs 3 lakh dowry demand, intensified the case against the in-laws.

Despite the mother-in-law's defense that the call reflected a domestic dispute unrelated to dowry, the court emphasized the importance of vigilance in cases involving a bride's death from possible dowry extortion. The police also countered the bail plea, pinpointing the mother-in-law as a main conspirator.
