Kenneth Iwamasa, who served as Matthew Perry's personal assistant, has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison for his involvement in the 'Friends' star's death due to a ketamine overdose. The sentencing concluded a significant investigation following Perry's death in October 2023 at the age of 54.
While imposing the sentence, Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett remarked on Iwamasa's reckless conduct, citing his awareness of Perry's struggles. Although Iwamasa denied malicious intent, the court criticized his enabling behavior, which included injecting Perry several times daily. The sentencing aligns with the prosecution's recommendations, marking the fifth and final outcome in this case.
Iwamasa entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death. He played a crucial role in the investigation, offering evidence against others involved in the illegal ketamine supply chain. His defense attorney argued for leniency, emphasizing Iwamasa's loyalty to Perry and his influence from the actor. In response, the judge noted Iwamasa's decision-making capacity, despite his claims of being under Perry's directive.
Perry's family, in statements to the court, expressed their profound disappointment with Iwamasa, whom they trusted to support Perry's recovery. Instead, they accused him of enabling Perry's addiction, betraying the trust placed in him. Perry's tragic end occurred after using ketamine for depression, leading him to seek illegal sources when legal prescriptions fell short of his desires.
