FIFA's ticketing strategies for the 2026 World Cup have come under legal scrutiny, as New York and New Jersey investigate potential consumer rights violations. Fans have expressed concern that FIFA's pricing tactics unfairly left them at a disadvantage.

The investigation, announced by the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey, focuses on ticketing methods for matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Subpoenas have been issued to FIFA for details on various ticketing aspects, including practices that reportedly pushed prices to unprecedented levels, as well as seat relocations.

New York's Attorney General Letitia James emphasized the importance of ensuring fair access to affordable tickets, while New Jersey's Attorney General Jennifer Davenport criticized FIFA for creating a challenging and expensive ticket-buying process. FIFA has not yet responded to these legal challenges.

The tournament is set to begin on June 11, with MetLife Stadium hosting Brazil versus Morocco on June 13, and tickets for the final reaching prices of nearly USD 33,000. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans a lottery to offer local residents 1,000 tickets at USD 50 each for these anticipated games.
