Iran Conflict Delays Formation of Gaza Stabilisation Force

The establishment of an International Stabilisation Force for Gaza, announced with optimism earlier this year, has encountered significant setbacks. All five nations that initially pledged troops have failed to uphold their commitments, largely due to regional complexities and rising tensions, particularly following the US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Indonesia, which promised the largest contribution of 8,000 troops, has paused its involvement indefinitely, citing a lack of direction from the US and domestic unrest over the unpopular Iran conflict. This decision reflects broader hesitance from other nations, who are wary of the unresolved ceasefire and ongoing violence in Gaza.

Complicating the situation further are Israel's military actions and Hamas' refusal to disarm, which have hindered ceasefire progress and prompted criticism from various stakeholders. Nickolay Mladenov of the Board of Peace has emphasized that disarmament is essential for any reconstruction efforts, a stance that has been met with resistance by Hamas.

Although plans for the stabilisation force languish, some countries like Kazakhstan and Albania have pledged limited humanitarian support. Despite mounting challenges, Indonesia's continued engagement remains a possibility, with interests tied to economic relations with the United States and President Subianto's international aspirations.
