Tensions Rise as Israel Conducts Airstrike in Beirut Suburb Ahead of Key Washington Discussions

In a move further escalating ongoing tensions, Israel's air force targeted a suburb south of Beirut with an airstrike. The attack, which unfolded a day before critical negotiations in Washington, disturbed a shaky ceasefire in place since April.

The strike hit an apartment complex in Choueifat, located near the Beirut International Airport, casting clouds of white smoke over the neighborhood. This marks the first assault close to the Lebanese capital since early May, when an Israeli strike previously claimed the life of a Hezbollah officer.

The conflict has heated up across southern Lebanon, with the Israeli military expanding operations and warning residents to evacuate. Recent attacks in Tyre resulted in a heavy toll, with numerous deaths reported by the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, Israeli and Lebanese officials are slated to meet for talks in the U.S. Both sides face pressure, as Hezbollah maintains its stance against the discussions, demanding priorities like the cessation of conflict in Lebanon be met first.
