Asaram re-entered custody at Jodhpur Central Jail on Thursday evening after the Rajasthan High Court maintained his life imprisonment sentence, concluding his temporary bail.
The court dismissed his appeal in the 2013 rape case, though he was acquitted of certain related charges. Supporters had gathered in large numbers earlier in the day to greet him at the Jodhpur airport. Asaram took time to visit his local ashram and undergo a medical examination before formally surrendering.
His legal team is considering further legal options, indicating potential steps towards the Supreme Court. The case, known for its notoriety, was reviewed by a division bench that reaffirmed the trial court's decision, emphasizing the significant impact on the survivor.
The bench reflected on the egregious violation of the minor's rights and dignity, contrasting it with the ideals symbolized by her birth date and the solemnity of India's Independence Day.
