Authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province have apprehended eleven social media activists for allegedly disseminating content that targets the military and instigates public unrest. These arrests were made following raids conducted on Thursday, according to a statement from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency.
Spokesperson for the agency revealed that the detentions took place in cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala. The individuals are accused of organizing provocative online campaigns primarily against the Pakistan Army. Digital evidence and social media files are being scrutinized to unearth potential networks and affiliations.
These suspects are facing charges under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) from 2016. Agency Director Muhammad Ali Waseem emphasized the seriousness of addressing anti-state propaganda, reflecting the government's firm stance on maintaining stability and preventing panic among the populace.
Sources indicate that some of those arrested may be associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned on various charges. This operation follows previous arrests earlier in the month for similar activities targeting state entities and foreign nations.
