Tragic End: Indigenous Leader Brooklyn Rivera Dies in State Custody

Brooklyn Rivera, a prominent Nicaraguan indigenous leader and former lawmaker, has died at the age of 73 while in state custody, according to reports by 100% Noticias. The news comes after widespread demands from his family and international bodies for proof of life following his detention earlier this year.

Rivera had been held since September 2023 as part of a government initiative targeting political dissent. Although officials later confirmed his detention, they were criticized for initially refusing to acknowledge it or allow family visitations. Photographs revealed his deteriorated state, showing him intubated and emaciated, which sparked outrage from human rights groups.

Known for his resistance against the first Sandinista government alongside the Contra rebels, Rivera's political party, Yatama, opposed and later allied with President Daniel Ortega. In a recent move, the Ortega government banned Yatama from participating in elections, further raising concerns about political repression.
