Civil Rights Groups Sue Over Abuses at El Paso Detention Center
Civil rights groups, including the ACLU, have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over alleged human rights abuses at Camp East Montana, an immigration detention center in El Paso, Texas. The suit highlights issues of inhumane treatment and seeks to improve conditions for detainees.
Civil rights organizations, led by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), have initiated legal action against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over claims of human rights violations at Camp East Montana, the largest immigration detention facility in the United States.
The lawsuit, filed in Texas' Western District Court, names ICE and its parent agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, as defendants. It marks the first legal challenge to the facility built under President Trump's immigration strategies. The ACLU aims to enhance living conditions for over 2,700 detainees at the camp.
An inspection in February revealed numerous detention standard violations, including issues related to use of force and medical care. The lawsuit claims these conditions are inhumane, while the DHS denies such allegations, maintaining that ICE upholds high standards in detainee welfare.
