Israeli troops have seized Beaufort Castle, a strategic stronghold atop a mountain in southern Lebanon. This marks the deepest military incursion by Israel into Lebanon in over a quarter-century, occurring in the context of escalated conflict with Hezbollah militants.
The operation comes after days of fierce combat and airstrikes in neighboring villages. The capture underscores a significant advance in the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which erupted on March 2. The fighting began after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel following attacks by Israel and the U.S. on Iran.
Despite an existing ceasefire since April 17, Israeli forces have moved deeper into Lebanese territory, capturing multiple villages. This escalation has sparked concern from international officials, with France's foreign minister calling for an urgent UN Security Council meeting.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted the operation as a major shift in policy. Israeli forces now control the Beaufort fortress, historically significant and long disputed, and intend to maintain their strategic position in southern Lebanon as military actions continue.
