Cambodia's Diplomatic Steps: A New Phase in the Gulf of Thailand Dispute

Cambodia has taken a decisive step in its ongoing maritime boundary dispute with Thailand by initiating a compulsory conciliation process under international law. This action follows Thailand's recent unilateral termination of a 2001 agreement, which had previously served as a negotiation framework in the Gulf of Thailand.

Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia stated this measure was necessary to safeguard the nation's sovereignty and maritime rights. This development highlights Cambodia's commitment to resolving the issue through legal avenues, moving away from last year's military confrontations.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the conciliation process allows expert panels to make recommendations. While their findings aren't legally binding, they represent a constructive step towards resolving the remaining tensions.
