Breakthrough Agreement on Hungarian Minority Rights Paves Path for Ukraine’s EU Talks
Hungary and Ukraine have reached an agreement regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, marking a significant breakthrough in their bilateral relations. This accord could lead to the approval of the first cluster of negotiating chapters in Ukraine’s EU accession talks, strengthening Kyiv's EU membership prospects.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Wednesday that Hungary and Ukraine have reached an agreement concerning the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. This development may facilitate the approval of the initial cluster of negotiating chapters in Ukraine's EU accession discussions.
The agreement signifies a potential resolution to a longstanding dispute over minority rights that has burdened the relationship between Budapest and Kyiv. Throughout the accession process, divided into chapters and clusters, approval from all EU members is necessary.
Magyar, who assumed office after defeating Viktor Orban earlier this year, expressed readiness to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy if a deal on minority rights is finalized. According to Magyar, the pact entails restoring a system of schools for ethnic minorities, permitting the use of the Hungarian language and symbols, and aims to embed these terms into Ukrainian legislation.
