Europe has thrown its support behind President Donald Trump's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. During his inaugural visit to Brussels as Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz emphasized the joint resolve of the EU and the U.S. to ramp up sanctions on Moscow should it neglect genuine peace negotiations.
Chancellor Merz highlighted the European Union's and the United States' commitment to bolstering Ukraine's efforts amidst the ongoing conflict. He stressed that, although Germany remained against collective EU debt for defense costs, it was imperative to back Ukraine where necessary.
Addressing reporters, Merz stated, "We call on Russia at last to set out on the path for real peace negotiations. If that doesn't happen, we won't hesitate, together with our European partners and the U.S., to increase the sanctions pressure."
