The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has made bold claims about the voting behavior of minorities in his state. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma alleged that the Congress party garners support from the minority community, particularly Muslims, due to a pervasive fear that the BJP will target them and their religious institutions if victorious in elections.
Sarma singled out Congress MPs from Assam, namely Gaurav Gogoi, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Rakibul Hussain, claiming their electoral success stems not from personal popularity but from this fear among the minority community. 'They did not get votes for their popularity, but due to fear,' Sarma asserted, suggesting that concerns over potential violence against religious sites motivate these votes.
Despite these claims, the Chief Minister noted an increasing trend of minority voters, especially women, shifting their support to BJP. This shift marks a significant development in Assam's political landscape, suggesting changing dynamics in voter allegiances.
