Trump's Tax Cuts: A Contentious Road Ahead
The U.S. House Republicans are discussing President Trump’s tax cut and budget bill, potentially increasing national debt by $3.72 trillion. Attempts to fund this by cutting Biden's green initiatives and altering safety-net programs have sparked controversy. A narrow majority holds key to passing the contentious plan.

Republicans in the United States House of Representatives are set to publicly debate significant aspects of President Donald Trump's tax cut and budget legislation on Tuesday. The controversial plan, which aims to extend tax cuts from Trump's first term, could add trillions to the national debt, already standing at $36.2 trillion. The Joint Tax Committee estimates the tax cuts would cost $3.72 trillion, with additional funds directed towards border security and national defense.
In an effort to offset the drop in revenue, Republicans propose eliminating many of former President Joe Biden's green energy initiatives and tightening requirements for food and health safety-net programs. This move, however, has raised concerns among some Republicans about alienating voters who supported Trump, creating internal party tensions as they strive to maintain their narrow 220-213 majority.
Attention also turns to sectors such as universities, which would face increased taxes on endowments. Incentives for electric vehicles and other green energy projects are also targeted, alongside proposals to require work for Medicaid and SNAP benefits, reducing eligibility for millions. Parties have until May 26 to reach an agreement, amid pressure from the looming debt ceiling deadline this summer.
