In a crucial meeting held in Chandigarh, BJP MP PP Chaudhary, heading the Joint Parliamentary Committee on One Nation, One Election, discussed the controversial initiative with regional and national political entities. Attendees included representatives from the BJP, INC, JJP, BSP, INLD, and former Chief Ministers as deliberations continued.

The initiative aims to pass the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill, allowing simultaneous national and assembly elections, which cleared the Lok Sabha hurdle last December. However, it was met with resistance, leading to a referral to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for detailed review.

Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, staunchly opposing the proposal, labeled it an attack on federalism and contrary to foundational constitutional principles. Contrarily, state ONOE Convenor, SS Channy, contended that public sentiment favors the initiative, citing advantages like cost reduction and minimized administrative disruption.
