High Voter Turnout in Kaliganj By-election Amid Controversies

The Kaliganj Assembly constituency in West Bengal saw a voter turnout of 69.85% during Thursday's by-election, as reported by officials. Despite some minor tensions and weather-related challenges, the polling was deemed largely peaceful.

The by-election was convened following the unexpected passing of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed. His daughter, Alifa Ahamed, a 38-year-old corporate professional, stood as the TMC candidate. Meanwhile, BJP nominated Ashis Ghosh and Congress fielded Kabil Uddin Shaikh with CPI(M) support.

Both TMC and BJP candidates expressed confidence, but the process wasn't without controversy. BJP's Ashis Ghosh alleged electoral misconduct over indelible ink application. Officials maintained rules were followed but requested a report. The outcome will be determined on June 23 when votes are counted.
