In an unexpected political development, Jagdeep Dhankhar, the former vice president of India, resigned late Monday evening after an unscheduled visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan. According to official sources, the resignation was submitted to President Murmu around 9 pm.
Dhankhar took to social media platform X to release his resignation letter, citing health considerations and adherence to medical advice as the reasons behind his immediate resignation, in line with Article 67(a) of the Constitution. His term was originally set to end in August 2027.
The timing of Dhankhar's resignation is noteworthy, coinciding with the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament. As the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, his departure leaves a significant vacancy in India's parliamentary leadership.
