At least six individuals lost their lives and numerous others were injured in a catastrophic explosion in Idlib province, northern Syria, officials announced on Thursday.
While the exact cause remains unspecified, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicated the blast occurred at an ammunition depot. The Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, confirmed the deaths and continue searching for survivors amidst challenging conditions.
Efforts to reach those trapped have been hindered by ongoing explosions, stated Raed al-Saleh, Syria's Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management. The incident unfolds as Syria grapples with the aftermath of a civil war that transformed Idlib into a stronghold for opposition forces.
