The INDIA bloc is poised to enter the vice presidential race, as sources indicate a decision to field a common candidate, despite the BJP-led NDA's numerical advantage. The bloc sees the contest as necessary to convey a potent political message.
Jagdeep Dhankhar's unexpected resignation as vice president for health reasons—amid rumors of underlying political causes—has catalyzed this move. With an electorate comprising 782 members from both Houses, the winning candidate requires 392 votes, should all vote. The NDA holds a stronger position in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The Election Commission has commenced preparations for the poll, aligning with Article 68 of the Constitution, which mandates swift elections upon a vice presidential vacancy. Dhankhar's tenure was interrupted, with his resignation coinciding with the Monsoon session's start, following a controversial tenure full of opposition clashes.
