In a significant move, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday introduced a statutory resolution to prolong the President's rule in Manipur until February 13, 2026. The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Bulletin announced the extension, resulting in continued central oversight under Article 356 of the Constitution.

This decision follows the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9, after which the centre imposed President's rule on February 13. Political maneuvers earlier this year, including meetings by BJP MLAs at MLA Thongam Biswajit Singh's residence, highlighted efforts to establish a stable government in Manipur.

Amidst growing tensions and political crisis, President Droupadi Murmu, on receiving a report from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, imposed President's rule in February. The state's legislative powers are now suspended, with governance duties transferred to Parliament, raising central control amid concerns over law and order.

The unrest stems from conflicts largely involving the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities, centered around economic opportunities and land disputes. The violence has led to significant social distress, with fatalities and mass displacement highlighting the instability requiring central intervention.
