The Election Commission of India has announced the appointment of P C Mody, the Rajya Sabha Secretary General, as the returning officer for the upcoming vice-presidential election. This decision follows the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the vice president's office due to health concerns.
According to a statement released by the Election Commission, the choice of Mody was made in collaboration with the Ministry of Law and Justice and approved by the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha. This move comes in preparation for the vice presidential election scheduled for 2025.
Supporting Mody in his new role, Garima Jain, Joint Secretary of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, and Vijay Kumar, Director of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, have been designated as assistant returning officers to oversee the election process.
