The Lok Sabha faced disruptions once again as Speaker Om Birla adjourned the proceedings until 2 PM on Friday, amid vociferous sloganeering by opposition members. The opposition is calling for discussions on crucial public matters, primarily focusing on the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls in Bihar before upcoming assembly elections.
Speaker Birla, addressing the chaos in the lower house, remarked on the necessity of adhering to protocol for protest, explicitly stating, 'There's a way to register a protest. If you don't want to run the Parliament...the house is adjourned till 2:00 PM today.' This move followed opposition MPs entering the well of the Lok Sabha, brandishing placards.
Prior to adjournment, Birla appealed to opposition members to permit normal functioning of the house, condemning their banner displays and noting that the deadlock is undesirable. He invited both government and opposition representatives to discuss resolutions, urging adherence to house norms for expressing dissent.
Earlier, Congress MP Manickam Tagore filed an adjournment motion seeking debate on the alleged 'Mass Disenfranchisement of 52 Lakh Voters in Bihar,' criticizing the Modi Government's actions via the Election Commission as unconstitutional. Since the session began on July 21, Parliament has seen frequent adjournments. Yesterday's proceedings ended early due to similar protests.
On Friday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge joined INDI Alliance MPs in a protest at Parliament's Makar Dwar against the SIR exercise in Bihar. Prominent Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, joined the march, holding signs and a large banner that declared the SIR as an 'Attack on Democracy.'
The MPs chanted slogans against the central government, denouncing the election revisions and demanding Prime Minister Modi address Parliament on pressing issues like the Pahalgam terror attack and the Bihar SIR ahead of state elections. They also seek Modi's response concerning claims by US President Donald Trump about mediating an Indo-Pak ceasefire following Operation Sindoor.
