In a fiery statement, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi condemned the arrest of two Catholic nuns in BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh, branding the move as a blatant attack on minority rights within India.
The nuns, Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis, along with Sukaman Mandavi, were detained at Durg railway station on July 25 following accusations of forced conversions and trafficking, allegations made by a local Bajrang Dal member. Priyanka contended that the arrests lacked a solid legal basis, highlighting a larger pattern of BJP's targeting of minorities.
Adding to the chorus of criticism, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal slammed Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister, accusing him of endorsing prejudice against minorities. Venugopal emphasized that the BJP's actions reveal a harsh reality of intolerance contradicting professed inclusivity. He warned communities to be cautious of BJP's purported protection and emphasized prioritizing social justice.
