West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Delhi Police of threatening a Bengali-speaking woman and her child, who were allegedly assaulted in the capital for speaking their mother tongue. Banerjee aired these claims through a video on social media.
However, the Delhi Police refuted the accusations, branding the video as fabricated and driven by political motives. According to Delhi Police's Deputy Commissioner (East) Abhishek Dhania, the video, which Banerjee shared on 'X', was said to portray police personnel abusing the woman and her child.
Upon further questioning, it emerged that the woman created the video at the behest of a politically affiliated relative from West Bengal's Malda district. The incident has fueled a political debate, with Banerjee urging Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-governed states to return to West Bengal if faced with harassment.
