Meghalaya Politics: Ronnie V Lyngdoh Joins NPP, Congress Loses Sole MLA
Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the lone Congress MLA in Meghalaya, has joined the ruling National People's Party (NPP). The move, followed by three other Congress MLAs, leaves the party with no representation in the 60-member assembly. The NPP now has 32 MLAs, strengthening its leadership in the state's coalition government.

Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the sole Congress MLA in Meghalaya, officially joined the ruling National People's Party (NPP) on Wednesday. Formerly the opposition chief whip, Lyngdoh submitted a merger letter to Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma in presence of senior NPP leaders and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The speaker approved the merger, recognizing Lyngdoh as an NPP MLA. Dhar expressed his elation over the development. The Congress initially secured five seats in the 2023 assembly elections but gradually lost members to the NPP, including Lyngdoh's recent defection.
With no remaining Congress MLA after their defections, the NPP's strength in the assembly increased to 32. The party now leads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, inclusive of the UDP and HSPDP, further solidified by BJP support.
