In a significant political shift, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the lone Congress MLA in Meghalaya, has switched allegiance to the ruling National People's Party (NPP) on Wednesday.
Lyngdoh, representing the Mylliem constituency and serving as the opposition chief whip, handed his letter of merger to Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma, with Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar among other senior leaders present to witness the move.
The Congress, now devoid of representation in the 60-member assembly, has accused the NPP of engineering defections through financial inducements. Meanwhile, the NPP continues to solidify its position in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, bolstered by BJP support.
