In a sharp critique, US President Donald Trump lambasted India and Russia for their close economic relationship. Accusing the two nations of holding what he termed as 'dead economies,' Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, coupled with sanctions for trade with Russia.
According to Trump, India's tariffs are exceptionally high, and their non-monetary trade barriers are unjust. The US president emphasized that these measures would commence from August 1, also calling India's purchase of Russian oil and military equipment contentious, especially amidst a global call for Russia to halt its aggression in Ukraine.
The timing of the sanctions announcement is perceived as a strategic move by Trump, laying groundwork for upcoming trade discussions scheduled for later in August. This tactic appears aligned with recent US trade successes with partners like Japan, the UK, and the EU.
