Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has launched a scathing critique of the Indian government's response to US President Donald Trump's recent comments about India's economy and the imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian goods. Chavan emphasizes the need for a strong rebuttal from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Chavan expressed outrage over Trump's remarks and questioned the effectiveness of PM Modi's foreign policy strategy, citing the frequent meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and the extravagant events arranged for Trump's visits as failures. He described the tariffs as consequences of foreign policy failures.
Trump's executive order to revise tariffs across 70 countries, including a significantly higher rate for India, has become a focal point of global trade tensions. The Indian government, through Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, has stated that it is assessing the impacts and will act to protect national interests.
