Federal Judge Upholds Trump's Policy On STEM Diversity Grants
A federal judge rejected a request from 16 Democratic states to compel the Trump administration to restore canceled diversity grants in STEM fields. The states claimed the administration lacked authority to terminate these grants, but the judge ruled the matter belongs to the Court of Federal Claims.

In a notable legal decision, a federal judge dismissed an effort by 16 Democratic-led states to reinstate hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants canceled by the Trump administration. These grants aimed to enhance diversity within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) sectors.
The states' attorneys general petitioned U.S. District Judge John Cronan in Manhattan to prevent the National Science Foundation (NSF) from rescinding funds intended to boost participation among women and minorities in STEM fields. The lawsuit, initiated in May, argued the administration overstepped in capping research funds and dismantling congressionally mandated diversity initiatives.
Judge Cronan, however, affirmed that the challenge to the NSF's grant terminations must be brought before the Court of Federal Claims. He also indicated the NSF's new policy, which emphasizes research opportunities for all Americans and calls for inclusivity without subgroup favoritism, does not contravene its statutory obligations, as the agency continues to support diversity projects.
